Essay Scoring Criteria

This scholarship is given in honor of Bill Mainerich. Bill was born and raised in Hibbing, Minnesota, and taught social studies for over 25 years in Worthington, Northfield, and Montevideo. In 1991, he received the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award. Bill also served as curriculum director at both Lac Qui Parle and Ortonville. He was the keynote speaker at the MCSS Spring Conference in 1997. Bill was an inspirational leader who helped train social studies teachers across the state for many years.

Eligibility Requirements:

Eligibility Requirements: Any 12 th grade student who is on track

to graduate in Spring 2009.

A completed essay that is 800 words or less; typed or word-processed; double-spaced, on single-sided pages.

 

Essays must be received on or before January 30, 2009.

Award winner will be announced March 5, 2009 at the Minnesota Council for the Social Studies Spring Conference.


Minnesota Council for the Social Studies is proud to sponsor the 6th Annual Bill Mainerich Memorial Scholarship. One scholarship will be awarded in the amount of $500.

The Minnesota Council for the Social Studies
Honors Three Teachers of the Year
(Elementary, Middle School, High School)
at the MCSS Spring Conference

The criteria for nomination are:

a) teacher must be teaching social studies or elementary at least half time.
b) teacher must be recognized by colleagues as an excellent social studies teacher.
c) teacher must utilize social studies materials and ideas that foster inquiry and development of social studies skills.
d) teacher must have an ongoing interest in improving his/her knowledge and skills in social studies instruction.

The elements of nomination:
a) Provide a letter of rationale/reasons for nominating this teacher
b) Include letters of recommendation by colleagues, administrators, parents, or students
c) Other documentation – photos, samples, etc. – are optional

The teacher does not need to be a current member of MCSS Winners will receive one year of free MCSS membership besides a money award from sponsoring publishers. You are encouraged to nominate one candidate for each of the three categories: elementary, middle school, and high school.
